What Happened?

  • Argentina has requested that Interpol issue an arrest warrant for Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi for his suspected role in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.

  • The 1994 AMIA bombing killed 85 people and injured hundreds more. It is considered one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Argentina’s history.

  • Argentina alleges that Vahidi, who was a commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards at the time, was involved in the planning and execution of the AMIA bombing.

  • Vahidi is currently visiting Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Argentina has requested that Interpol issue a “red notice” to facilitate his arrest during his overseas trip.

  • The Argentine government has long sought to hold those responsible for the AMIA bombing accountable. This latest move to pursue the arrest of Vahidi is part of their ongoing efforts.
